I'm assuming most of you are Seinfeld watchers, and have seen Office Space at least once. Does anyone remember the episode where Elaine gets angry at all the forced socializing for birthdays and you-were-out-sick days and transfer-to-a-new-department days and Happy Yom Kippur Days? And cake eating and song singing? But then she gets used to eating cake every day and winds up eating that antique slice of cake from J. Peterman's office and replacing it with an Entemann's? Well, thats how it feels at my work. Well, aside from the ancient cake part. There's only 15 or 16 people working in the office, but it feels like we've got thirty or forty birthdays.
Every time I turn around it's "cake day, cake day". Not "birthday, birthday", but "cake day". On more than one occasion a birthday card has been passed around and no one knows who the hell it's for. And the singing! My God. We could not sound more unenthusiastic. It's the most depressing version of "Happy Birthday" you'd ever want to hear, all monotonus and mumbly when it comes to whomever's birthday it is.. And then everyone gets their slice of cake and runs back to their cubicle and stuff's it down their gullet. I hate it. But I love cake. So what choice do I have really?
Happy birthday to you...
